Facebook and Ray-Ban will collaborate to launch smart glasses in 2021.
Facebook has collaborated with Ray-parent Ban's company EssilorLuxottica to develop smart glasses, confirming previous claims. The businesses want to launch the first smart glasses through this collaboration in 2021.
For the time being, the full information, including the name, specs, software, and cost, remains unclear. However, Facebook confirmed to The Verge that the forthcoming consumer-focused smart glasses would not include an embedded display. The firm promises to provide additional details about these smart spectacles next year.
“We're excited to investigate gadgets that can help individuals connect with those who matter the most to them. Wearables have the ability to accomplish this. We have an equally ambitious partner in EssilorLuxottica, who will offer their experience and world-class brand portfolio to the first genuinely stylish smart glasses,” stated Andrew Bosworth, Vice President of Facebook Reality Labs.

According to Hugo Barra, VP of Facebook Reality Labs, the firm has been in negotiations with Ray-Ban for several years to make this a reality. “By combining a brand that is loved and worn by millions of customers worldwide with technology that has brought the world closer together, we can redefine expectations surrounding wearables,” says Rocco Basilico, Luxottica's Chief Wearables Officer.
Along with this announcement, Facebook announced Project Aria (picture above), its ongoing development on wearable AR glasses. Project Aria is a prototype gadget that will assist the firm in capturing video and audio from the wearer's point of view, as well as eye movement and position data.
Because it is a prototype, Facebook's Project Aria glasses will not be available for purchase anytime soon. However, in September, the firm will test the product with a small group of Facebook workers and contractors in the United States.
