Apart from focusing on new features like multi-device compatibility, joinable group calls, and the option to alter the quality of photos and videos before sharing them, WhatsApp has also added many privacy-related enhancements in recent months. Earlier this year, the messaging behemoth began testing end-to-end encryption for cloud backups. WhatsApp is now expanding this privacy option to include local backups as well.

Since 2014, WhatsApp has provided end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for communications on its platform. The messaging app, however, does not support E2EE for cloud or local backups. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is planning to fix this shortly.

End-to-End Encryption for WhatsApp Local Backups:-

With the E2EE functionality on local and cloud backups, users will be able to encrypt backups on their devices as well as in the cloud using a unique password or encryption key. As a result, when it comes time to restore conversations and media from the cloud or from an older device, users will be required to provide their password or encryption key to access the backups.

Users will be able to restrict unwanted access to their conversations and media backups in this manner. However, because the password and encryption key is secret, there is no way to retrieve the data if a user forgets the encryption key or password to access backups. It is not disclosed to WhatsApp, Facebook, or any other third-party business.

End-to-end encryption for local backups will be available in a future version, according to WABetaInfo. We will keep you updated on the progress of this feature, so stay tuned for further information.
